Gardening

Oaklands House residents David and Irene enjoyed a little gardening time whilst the weather was dry.  David was a keen gardener and although now unable to physically do the work, he is a great source of information and very happy to share it. Irene says she is fairly new to gardening but enjoys doing it and was willing to follow David’s instructions (David deemed the carrots ready to pull) and carry out the physical work, which she enjoyed immensely.

Gardens and gardening can help people living with dementia enjoy socialising, and connect with others by creating a shared experience, it can stimulate the senses and memories, all of which greatly improves their well-being.

Once the carrots had been pulled up, Irene was very pleased to be able to hand them over to Head Chef Sarah, for use in the kitchen. Both David and Irene said how much they enjoyed being out in the fresh air and are looking forward to more gardening
