About Worcester

The cathedral city of Worcester in Worcestershire is most famous for being the home of Royal Worcester Porcelain, Lea & Perrins (the makers of traditional Worcestershire sauce), and Berrow’s Worcester Journal, the world’s oldest newspaper. Plus, the famous composer Edward Elgar grew up in the city – most of us will know him as the man behind the first of the five Pomp and Circumstance Marches traditionally performed every year at the Last Night of the Proms!

Worcester is also bursting with a rich history dating back to ancient times, founded originally by the Romans around 50 AD. After the Romans left, Worcester became an important religious centre, and established its (now renowned) cathedral in the 7th century. During medieval times, Worcester grew as a thriving market town with the cathedral at the heart. Worcester played a key role during the Civil War in the mid-1600s with the last battle of the war, the Battle of Worcester, ending with the defeat of King Charles II’s forces by the Parliamentarians. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Worcester became industrialised, with a prevalent growth in porcelain manufacturing and engineering. It was during this time the famous Worcester Porcelain was established.

Today, the renowned city near Birmingham, Gloucester, and Hereford continues to be celebrated for its stunning cathedral, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural and educational scene. With the River Severn skirting its western edge, the city’s population of over 100,000 enjoys a lively and bustling community atmosphere.

If you are looking to spend time with your loved one outside of our Worcester care homes, Worcestershire offers an entire range of outdoor activities that are suitable for elderly people. Spending time outdoors with loved ones is a great way to get some fresh air, exercise and take in the natural beauty of this historic city.

Popular Outdoor Activities

  • Scenic walks: Whether you choose a flat, leisurely walk around the town, as stroll along the beautiful River Severn, or a more challenging walk in the Malvern Hills, you will benefit from the fresh air, exercise, and the joy of being outdoors.
  • Visit Worcester Cathedral: If stunning architecture, medieval cloisters, and ancient crypts float your boat, you will love exploring the city’s cathedral. Similarly, you and your loved ones may just want to soak up the peaceful atmosphere and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the cathedral’s café.
  • Explore Historic Buildings: You could visit the gardens at The Commandery, step back in time at the Tudor House Museum, enjoy the Museum of Royal Worcester, or peruse the Worcester City Art Gallery & museum and The Guildhall Worcester. For those of you that enjoy a tipple, a trip to the Piston Distillery Worcester will serve you well. You will learn the meticulous process that makes Piston Oak Aged Dry Gin.
  • Visit A Garden Centre:  Our residents love a trip to a local garden centre to enjoy looking at all the plants and enjoying a coffee, chat, and a cake together. Our favourites are St Peters Garden Centre and De Beers Garden Centre. Another favourite haunt for our Worcester homes for a drink and a Danish is Clives Fruit Farm, particularly when followed by a countryside drive.
  • Pub Lunch: You cannot beat a visit to a traditional pub to enjoy some tasty food, a beverage, and a catch up. Our residents love venturing out for lunch by the River Severn at The Lower Lode Inn. When the weather is onside, the scenery is picturesque.
Visiting with little ones? If you are looking for an activity that will keep children entertained whilst visiting a loved one, we recommend Malvern Splash and Attwell Farm Park for hours of family fun.

Rainy Day Activities In Worcester

If the weather is a bit gloomier, or your loved one is not able to go outside, there are still plenty of activities that you can do together at Worcester care homes. We enjoy a calendar full of events and activities, including:
  • Pet Therapy sessions. Spending time with animals is not only fun but has numerous health and behavioural benefits for the elderly. We always welcome volunteers, who bring in their pets and spend time with our residents. Our regular visitors include Animal Club and Critterish All Sorts.
  • Visits from local singers, entertainers, and community groups. Our afternoons are often brightened with entertainment from our local community. Being entertained is not only joyous, but music can be hugely beneficial for evoking nostalgic memories, as well as calming and soothing elderly residents (particularly those living with dementia) too. Regular entertainers to our Worcester homes include local professional singers; Zoe from My Music Works, Debbie Miles, Rob Lloyd, and vintage singer, Melissa Hollick, A&G Magicians, SUSA ukelele band, Appleyard Morris Dancers, and touring theatre group Tickled Pink Productions who performed our Christmas pantomime! We recently also welcomed the Lullababy Kidderminster mums and babies’ group for a “rock and roll” session complete with instruments, music, and pom poms!
  • Flower arranging. Our residents love this activity so much, we make sure it is on the calendar at least twice monthly.
  • Arts & crafts. We have a variety of arts and crafts activities every week, such as painting, drawing, and knitting. Recently we made some dog treats and toys which we donated to our local dog kennel.
  • Special celebrations and other social activities. We love celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones together. Plus, film nights and coffee mornings and afternoon teas are a regular on the events schedule.
  • Exercise classes. Our Lifestyle Leads offer a variety of exercise classes and activities for residents, such as light stretching, chair yoga and chair ball games. Dancing is another treasure activity.
  • Games. Board games, puzzles and cards can be tailored to all abilities, this includes games for dementia residents.
